The Cayenne is the car that proved a heavy SUV could be genuinely good to drive, and three generations later it is still the benchmark. The steering has weight to it, the body stays flat through a fast sweeper on Mulholland, and the brakes have the same unhurried confidence as the sports cars in the showroom. Quick without being highly strung, and quiet at freeway speed.

What makes it work as a rental is that it is a proper SUV underneath the handling. Five adults fit without negotiation, the boot swallows a week of luggage for two or a weekend for four, and it sits high enough to see over traffic on the 10 without being awkward in a parking structure.

Carmine red changes the car completely. The wide shoulders and the low-set lamps read as deliberate design rather than as background traffic, and with the black wheels and black roof rails it is the reason people look twice at a shape they have seen a thousand times. It is not the mid-range colour, and it is not priced as one — but it is the Cayenne that gets photographed.

How much does it cost to rent a Porsche Cayenne in Los Angeles?
The red Cayenne is $249 a day. The day rate is the whole of it on this car — there is no weekly or monthly block, so a longer booking is priced day by day. Delivery to our Beverly Hills partner hotels is complimentary; LAX delivery is charged each way, in two tiers, and the figures are on our delivery page.
Cayenne or Macan?
Size. The Cayenne is the full-size one — four adults, a week of luggage, and a longer nose to park. The Macan is the compact one — two people, weekend bags, any structure in the city. They drive alike; the Cayenne is the more composed of the two at speed.
Is this a Turbo?
No — this is the standard Cayenne, the V6, and we would rather say so here than at the kerb. Fast enough to be enjoyable on a canyon road, quiet enough for the freeway, and priced as the car it is rather than as the Turbo it is not.
How do the two Cayennes differ?
This is the red SUV; the black one on the other page is the Coupé, with the fastback roof and a smaller boot. Same underpinnings, two different cars to look at — pick by shape and by the dates.
