Renting a Luxury Car in Los Angeles With a Foreign Licence

What we ask for, and what we do not
- Asked for: a passport; a licence from your home country, in your own name, held two years; a credit card in the driver’s name, for the refundable deposit — from $350 to $2,000, set by the car.
- Not asked for: an International Driving Permit; a US address; a US credit history.
That is the whole check, on every car in the fleet, and the deposit comes back 5–7 business days after the car is returned.
The rules, in one table
Every requirement, one line each. These are the figures the booking runs on, read from the same place the quote reads them, so if one changes the table changes with it.

Two things the table does not say because they are not rules. There is no counter: the car comes to you, and the handover happens where the car is. And the quote is the price — the rate, the cover, the refundable deposit and the sales tax are on it, in USD, before you pay.
Which licences we see most
United Kingdom. The photocard licence and a passport. Nothing else; an IDP is not asked for.
Australia. A state licence and a passport, on any car in the fleet including the open ones — the question below on convertibles has the names.
Canada. A provincial licence and a passport. A Canadian credit card carries the deposit; there is no US credit file to have.
European Union. A licence from any member state and a passport. The licence itself is enough; a translation or a permit is not part of the check.
Mexico. A licence and a passport, and an enquiry written in Spanish is answered the same day — renta, precio, disponibilidad, whichever way you ask it.
Another US state. A licence from New York, Texas, Florida or anywhere else in the country is a US licence, and it is treated exactly as a Californian one — no passport, the same age, the same deposit, the same car.

Under 25
The minimum age is 21 across the fleet, with a licence held two years, and there is no separate age bar for the exotics. Between 21 and 25 a young-driver fee is added per day: $50 on most of the fleet, and $175 on cars whose refundable deposit is $1,500 or more, which is the exotic and flagship band. A foreign licence changes the age rule in neither direction; the fee is the same for a visitor as for a local, and it is in the quote before you pay rather than mentioned at handover.
Younger than 21, from 18, is considered case by case on your own full-coverage insurance and a larger deposit. It is approval, not entitlement — ask rather than assume, and you get a straight answer before you plan anything around it.
Insurance from abroad
If your policy does not carry over to the US, cover is arranged with the booking at $50 to $225 a day by the car’s deposit band, and the quote shows it before you pay. If it does, it is tested the same four ways as a policy written here. It has to carry collision and comprehensive rather than liability only; its physical-damage limit has to reach the car you are renting; it must not exclude exotic or high-value rentals; and every driver has to be named on both the policy and the booking. Send the certificate with the booking and we say before anything is committed whether it qualifies.
Where it does not, the damage-and-liability cover is arranged with the booking rather than sold at a desk, and the deposit band sets the figure: the everyday shelf at the bottom of that range, the exotics and flagships at the top. Where the car meets you
At the hotel, for most visitors. Delivery is complimentary at our four Beverly Hills partner hotels — the Beverly Wilshire, the Four Seasons at Doheny, L’Ermitage and the Maybourne — where the car waits under the porte-cochère and you step out of the lobby and into the keys. Any other hotel, residence or short let in Los Angeles is priced by distance from the lot, $75 one way inside 10 miles, and itemised on the quote beside the rate; the ladder is on the delivery page.
At LAX, two ways. The car is left in the airport parking structure for $75 each way and you ride the free shuttle out to it, or it is brought to the terminal and handed over at the kerb, bags in, for $150 each way. Give us the flight number rather than the landing time, so a delay on the way in costs nothing.
