Mechanically the X6 is an X5: the same platform, the same all-wheel drive, the same quiet at freeway speed. What changes is the roof, which falls from the B-pillar into one long fastback, and the effect on the road is more dramatic than the description suggests — from behind it is one of the widest, lowest-looking things in any Los Angeles car park.

It drives like the X5 with a slightly firmer edge. Five seats, an adult-sized back row, and a boot that is long rather than tall — the roofline takes height, not length. Through the fast sweepers above Malibu it stays flat and quiet in a way a car this tall has no right to, which is the BMW part of the bargain and the reason to choose it over the softer rivals.

Silver is the finish that shows what the X6 actually is. The car is one long curve from the windscreen to the tail, and that curve only reads when light can run along it; on a black X6 the roofline disappears and you are left with a large dark SUV, which is precisely the car this one was designed not to be. What you give up is boot height and the view over your shoulder. If the week involves a lot of luggage or a lot of reverse parking, the X5 is the sensible car — and this is the one you want.

How much does it cost to rent a BMW X6 in Los Angeles?
The silver X6 is $179 a day. The day rate is the whole of it on this car — there is no weekly or monthly block, so a longer booking is priced day by day. Delivery to our Beverly Hills partner hotels is complimentary; LAX delivery is charged each way, in two tiers, and the figures are on our delivery page.
How is it different from the X5?
Underneath, it is not. The X6 shares the X5's platform, engines and all-wheel drive; what you pay for is the fastback roof, which costs boot height and the view over your shoulder and buys a shape nothing else in the car park has. Four adults with a week of luggage should take the X5. Two people who want to be looked at should take this.
Does the sloping roof hurt the back seat?
Less than it looks. The rear seats sit low enough that an adult of average height has headroom to spare; it is the boot that gives up space, and it gives up height rather than length — soft bags and two large cases fit, a tall hard case may not.
Is it hard to park in Los Angeles?
It is a large car, and the rear window is a letterbox. The cameras and sensors do the work, and once you trust them it goes into an ordinary Santa Monica structure without drama.
