Bought For Comfort

Silver Mercedes GLE

The mid-size Mercedes SUV that does the long, quiet days — five seats, real luggage, and the oldest colour in the book.

There is a GLE in the fleet with a badge and a noise. This is the other one.

The GLE is the Mercedes SUV people buy for comfort, and it is unusually good at it. The cabin is quiet enough at freeway speed that a run to Santa Barbara passes without anyone raising their voice, the ride takes the patched surfaces of a Los Angeles side street out of the equation, and the seats are the kind Mercedes has always been good at — supportive for three hours rather than soft for ten minutes.

01Above Malibu at dusk, the angle the listing photograph was taken from — and the last of the light on the shoulder line.

It is a genuinely large five-seater. Rear legroom is generous, the boot takes four large cases with the tailgate closed, and the tailgate is powered. This is the standard GLE, not the AMG — smooth and unhurried rather than fast — and if you want the loud version, the AMG GLE 53 is in the fleet beside it.

Silver on a large Mercedes SUV is the oldest combination in the book and still the most convincing. The GLE is drawn around one long horizontal shoulder running the length of the flank, and a light metallic is what makes that line visible. It is the difference between a car that looks designed and a car that looks big.

Smooth rather than fast.
Which is what a week in it wants.

Queries

How much does it cost to rent a Mercedes GLE in Los Angeles?
The silver GLE is $199 a day. The day rate is the whole of it on this car — there is no weekly or monthly block, so a longer booking is priced day by day. Delivery to our Beverly Hills partner hotels is complimentary; LAX delivery is charged each way, in two tiers, and the figures are on our delivery page.
How is it different from the AMG GLE 53 you also have?
Same body, different temperament. The AMG has the vertical-slat grille, the noise and the pace; this one has the big-star grille, the quiet and the price. For a week of hotels, restaurants and the coast road, most guests are happier in this one and do not miss what the AMG adds.
Does it have a third row?
No — this GLE is a five-seater with the boot that a five-seater gives you, which is the point of it. For six or more, the Escalade ESV and the Suburban are the cars in the fleet with a real third row.
Is it a good car for a family?
It is the car we send families to. Two child seats fit across the back with room for an adult between them, the powered tailgate opens with your hands full, and the running boards are the right height for a child to climb in unaided.
Can I see the dates before I call?
Yes — the diary on this page is the live fleet calendar. If a date is open there, it is open.

The terms, before you commit

Refundable deposit
$750
A hold, not a charge. Back with you 5–7 business days after the car is home.
Damage and liability cover
$100 a day
Mandatory, and priced off the deposit rather than the rate. Your own qualifying full-coverage policy takes this line out of the quote entirely.
Driver, 21–24
$50 a day
Twenty-one is the floor, with a licence held two years. The higher band applies above a $1,500 deposit; this car is below it.
Shortest booking
24 hours
No maximum. Delivery is complimentary at our Robertson Boulevard lot and our four Beverly Hills partner hotels; LAX is $75 to the parking structure or $150 to the terminal, each way.

This one is the same rate at every length — it carries no multi-day block, so three days is three times one day. We would rather say that than imply a discount that is not there.
