Rear Engined
Yellow Porsche 911
The engine is behind the back axle, where nobody else has dared put one, and it has been the right answer for sixty years.
Every other sports car in this city is described by how close it gets to this one.
A flat-six hung out behind the rear axle is an engineering decision no rival copied and Porsche never abandoned. What it buys is traction out of a corner and a shape that has not needed redrawing since the sixties — and, less famously, a supercar you can drive to dinner without an argument.
What surprises people who have not driven one is how ordinary it is at ordinary speeds. It is narrower than most of the SUVs in this fleet, the visibility out of it is genuinely good, the ride is civilised over a patched Los Angeles surface, and the boot in the nose takes two weekend bags. None of that is what a 911 is famous for, and all of it is why people who own one use it every day.
Then Mulholland empties out and the other half of the car arrives. The weight sits behind you, the rear tyres dig in rather than washing wide, and the whole thing tightens up in a way that reads as confidence rather than drama.
