A cabriolet gives you sky and takes the roofline away with it. A coupe keeps the roofline and keeps you underneath it. The Targa is the one car that refuses to choose: the rear glass lifts, the panel above your head folds back behind the seats, and the brushed hoop that has marked this model out since 1965 stays standing.

The whole performance takes about nineteen seconds and it is the best thing to watch in any hotel forecourt in Los Angeles. The glass canopy rises, the roof panel lifts clear and stows, the glass comes back down, and what is left is a 911 with nothing over the driver and the same silhouette it had a moment earlier. People stop walking.

What you get afterwards is open air rather than an open car, and that distinction is the point rather than a compromise. The hoop and the rear glass stay, so there is no buffeting at speed and no conversation shouted over the wind — you can drive the coast road with the roof off and still hear the person next to you.

How much does it cost to rent a Porsche 911 Targa in Los Angeles?
The grey Targa is $749 a day. The day rate is the whole of it on this car — there is no weekly or monthly block, so a longer booking is priced day by day. Delivery to our Beverly Hills partner hotels is complimentary.
Is a Targa the same as a convertible?
No, and it matters if you are booking for photographs. The panel above your head folds away; the silver hoop and the wrap-around rear glass stay in place. You get open air rather than a completely open car. For a fully open Porsche, ask about the Boxster instead.
Can I open the roof myself, and can I do it while driving?
Yes to the first — it is one control on the centre console and takes about nineteen seconds. No to the second: the car has to be stopped. Plan on pulling over at the overlook rather than opening it on the move.
How many people fit, and where does the luggage go?
Two comfortably, with two small rear seats behind them that suit bags or a short hop with children. The boot is in the nose and takes two soft weekend cases. For four adults and their luggage, ask about the BMW 7 or the Bentley Bentayga.
