A mid-engined car turns in differently and everybody notices it within a mile. The mass is between the axles rather than hanging off one end, so the nose goes where it is pointed without the delay a front-engined car has, and the whole thing changes direction as one piece. The practical surprise is the luggage. There is a boot behind the engine and another under the bonnet, and between them they take more than a 911 will — a mid-engined two-seater turns out to be the most usable shape for a week of hand luggage and camera bags. The ride is firm but liveable, and it is painless in traffic in a way that its lap times do not suggest.

This is the bright saturated blue Porsche keeps for the cars it wants remembered, over gold-finished wheels and yellow calipers. On a coast road at the right hour it is one of the strongest colour combinations in the fleet.

How much does it cost to rent a Porsche 718 Cayman in Los Angeles?
The blue Cayman is $329 a day. The day rate is the whole of it on this car — there is no weekly or monthly block, so a longer booking is priced day by day. Delivery to our Beverly Hills partner hotels is complimentary.
What is the difference between the Cayman and the Boxster?
The roof. They are the same mid-engined car; the Cayman has a fixed one and the Boxster does not. The Cayman is marginally the sharper of the two and it has more luggage space. If you want open air, ask about the Boxster and we will point you straight at it.
Is there anywhere to put luggage in a two-seater?
More than you would expect. There is a boot under the bonnet and a second one behind the engine, and together they take more than a 911 does. Two soft weekend cases and a camera bag is comfortable.
Is it uncomfortable in traffic?
No. The ride is firm and you know it is a sports car, but it is genuinely painless on Santa Monica Boulevard at five o'clock — which is not something every car in this bracket can claim.
