Flat-Six Engine Explained: What a Boxer Six Actually Is

A flat-six is a six-cylinder engine with its cylinders lying on their sides in two banks of three, one bank on each side of a single crankshaft, set 180 degrees apart. Every other six-cylinder engine in production stands its cylinders up; this one lies them down, and almost everything people notice about a flat-six follows from that.

The layout is also called a boxer six, and the nickname is the clearest description of it: opposing pistons punch outwards and back inwards together, like a pair of fists. It is the engine in the back of a Porsche 911, it was the engine in the back of a Chevrolet Corvair, and outside those two families it is rare enough that most drivers will go a lifetime without owning one.

We should say at the top what we do not have, because an article about an engine written by a company that rents cars is only worth reading if it is honest about the garage. There is no flat-six in this fleet. There is a boxer, and it has four cylinders rather than six, and the difference between those two things is the most useful thing on this page.

The badge is the whole story. “Boxster” is a compound of boxer and roadster — the architecture named the car. The 718 generation kept the architecture and dropped two cylinders.

What makes it a flat-six rather than a V6

Take six cylinders and a crankshaft. You can arrange them three ways, and every six-cylinder engine ever built is one of the three.

  • Inline-six. All six in a single row, standing upright. Long, narrow and naturally smooth. This is what BMW, Mercedes and Land Rover all went back to in the last decade after a long detour.
  • V6. Two banks of three at an angle to each other, usually 60 or 90 degrees. Short and compact, which is why it fits sideways under a front-wheel-drive bonnet, and why it needs a balance shaft to behave.
  • Flat-six. Two banks of three, opened all the way out to 180 degrees, so the cylinders lie flat and the crankshaft sits between them. Short like a V6 and smooth like an inline-six, at the cost of being wide.

The flat-six is the awkward one to package and the best one on paper. Laying the cylinders down drops the crankshaft and the whole mass of the engine much closer to the road than either alternative, which lowers the car's centre of gravity without lowering the car. Opposing every piston with another piston moving the opposite way cancels the shaking forces outright: Wikipedia's survey of flat-six production puts it plainly — a boxer six has perfect primary and secondary balance and no rocking couple, which is a claim an inline-six can match and a V6 cannot make without help.

Boxer or 180-degree V — the distinction people get wrong

Not every engine with flat cylinders is a boxer, and the difference is in the crankshaft rather than in the bodywork.

In a true boxer, each piston has its own crankpin and the two opposing pistons move outwards at the same moment and inwards at the same moment. In a 180-degree V, two opposing pistons share a crankpin, which means that when one goes left the other goes left too. They look identical from the outside. They are not balanced the same way, they do not sound the same, and the racing engines people usually mean when they say "flat-twelve" — the Ferrari 512s, the flat-12 Formula One cars — were 180-degree Vs rather than boxers.

For a six specifically, the boxer arrangement is what Porsche and Subaru have both used, and it is the reason the layout has a reputation for smoothness rather than merely for being unusual.

Why it sounds different from an inline-six

The sound is the reason most people search for this engine in the first place, and it deserves a more careful answer than "it just does".

Three things separate the note. The first is geometry: the exhaust ports face outwards on both sides of the car, so a flat-six wears two short manifolds that meet late, where an inline-six wears one long one. Pulses arrive at the collector in a different order and with different lengths of pipe behind them. The second is that the firing interval is even — every 120 degrees of crankshaft rotation, the same as an inline-six — so the raw rhythm is regular rather than the offbeat thrum of a cross-plane V8. The third is history: for the first thirty-five years the Porsche flat-six was air-cooled, which meant no water jacket damping the mechanical noise and a cooling fan turning at engine speed sitting on top of it. Much of what people remember as "the flat-six sound" is really the sound of a flat-six with nothing wrapped around it.

A modern water-cooled one is quieter, cleaner and, to most ears, still unmistakable. That is a description rather than a measurement, and we would rather label it as one than dress it up.

Who has actually built one

The list is short, which is the point.

Two of those five are gone entirely and one is a footnote. In 2026 the flat-six is effectively one company's engine: Porsche's current 911 range is where you go to buy a new one, and there is no second option at any price.

That scarcity is why the term is worth defining properly. Somebody reading about a 911, a Cayman GT4 or a 1967 Corvair is reading about the same architecture in three completely different cars, and the word that connects them is doing real work.

The red 718 Boxster in this garage has a boxer engine sitting behind the seats. It has four cylinders, not six. That is not a detail we would like to skate past, because it is exactly the thing a reader who came here for a flat-six wants to know before they call.

What the four keeps is the architecture: cylinders lying flat, perfect balance across the pairs, the crankshaft low in the car and the whole mass of the engine between the axles. What it loses is the top two octaves. A turbocharged flat-four breathes through a turbine that muffles the exhaust and flattens the note into something purposeful rather than operatic. On the road, in traffic, at the speeds Sunset allows, the two engines are much closer than the internet suggests. On the exit of a corner at four thousand revolutions with the roof folded away, they are not, and anybody telling you otherwise is selling a Boxster.

What is in the garage instead

Nobody rents a flat-six in Los Angeles, ourselves included, and pretending otherwise wastes a Friday afternoon for two people. What we do hold is most of the other architectures, and if the engine is genuinely what you came for, the honest move is to pick a different one on purpose rather than a flat-six by accident.

V10Lamborghini Huracán Evo5.2 litres, naturally aspirated, no turbochargers between the combustion and your ears. If the engine is the reason for the day, this is the loudest argument in the fleet and the closest thing to the old air-cooled experience in a modern car.
V12Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Wraith, Dawn6.6 and 6.75 litres, twin-turbocharged, and engineered specifically so that you cannot hear them. The opposite design brief to a flat-six, executed just as completely.

The inline-six is the interesting substitute and almost nobody suggests it. It is the other layout with perfect primary and secondary balance, it is in four cars here, and on a long drive up the coast the thing you actually feel — an engine that never buzzes through the wheel — is the same thing a flat-six gives you.

A flat-six is six cylinders lying flat in two banks of three around one crankshaft. It is short like a V6, smooth like an inline-six, low in the car in a way neither can match, and wide enough that hardly anybody has been willing to package it. In 2026 that means Porsche, and it means the 911. Which cars still come with a flat-six?

Effectively one family. Porsche has built flat-sixes continuously since 1963 and the 911 range is the only place to buy a new one today. Subaru stopped in 2019, Chevrolet stopped with the Corvair in 1969, and nobody else has tried in decades.

If the engine matters most, what should I book instead?

The naturally aspirated V10 in the yellow Huracán Evo if the noise is the point — there is no turbocharger between the combustion and your ears. The mid-engined Boxster if balance is the point.
