Not the model: the GLS 600 is the Maybach here. Three things do. Which day — a Saturday in June is not a Tuesday in February, and the calendar is the whole negotiation. How long you keep it. And whether you want the keys or a driver, which is quoted on its own. Everything else is fixed before you book rather than negotiated at handover.

The day rate multiplied by the days; the Protection plan at a per-day figure set by the car’s deposit band, and this one sits in the top band; Los Angeles County sales tax; and delivery if you want it somewhere we do not already go. Yes, and it is the commonest way this one goes out. The GLS 600 is built to be sat behind rather than driven: the rear seats recline, the cabin is the quietest we hold, and the point of the car is the half hour between the hotel and the venue. A chauffeured day is arranged and quoted separately from the rate above, because the driver’s hours are their own line. Say so when you enquire rather than on the morning.

Five, and yes. It is a full-size SUV, so the boot takes long-haul cases rather than negotiating with them, and the two rear seats are the good ones. Four adults travel very comfortably, and a fifth takes the middle of the bench. For a larger group we would put you in the Sprinter and keep this one for the arrival.

Every car here carries a daily mileage allowance, and on a full-size SUV it is the more generous band rather than the exotic one. Anything beyond it is settled per mile when the car comes back, and the allowance sits in the quote before you book rather than being mentioned at handover. If the plan involves a long run out of the city, say so when you enquire: a longer booking can carry a different allowance, and the allowance is set to fit the run.

A fortnight for a Saturday in season, and longer for a wedding, because the date will not move. What you need: to be twenty-one or over with a licence held two years, a credit card in the primary renter’s name, and cover — your own full policy or ours, priced by the day. Under twenty-five there is a young-driver fee, and on a car in this deposit band it is the higher of the two we charge. Visitors bring a passport alongside the home licence — we do not ask for an International Driving Permit.

A refundable security deposit, held against your card and released 5–7 business days after a clean return, longer only if there is damage to price; the Protection plan, arranged alongside the booking unless your own full-coverage policy extends to the car; Los Angeles County sales tax; and delivery outside our partner Beverly Hills hotels, where it is complimentary. Every car goes out with a full tank of 91-octane premium and comes back full; returned short, the charge is what the fuel actually costs at the nearest premium station plus a $20 service charge for the trip. The mileage allowance is set per car and stated with the confirmation.

Friday to Monday is three days, so a car collected on Friday afternoon gives you the whole weekend.

The coast road is the drive most guests take first, and every car may leave the state — Las Vegas, Arizona, up the coast — as long as you tell us the plan in advance and keep the daily mileage allowance in mind, which is set per car and arrives in writing with the booking confirmation. The car comes home to Los Angeles: there is no one-way drop in another city.
