A GLS 600 starts as the largest SUV Mercedes makes and is then taken apart by Maybach: the third row comes out, two reclining seats go in its place, the grille grows a set of vertical chrome slats and running boards fold out of the sills when a door opens.

Almost every decision on this car is about the second row rather than the driving seat, which is unusual for something we let self-drive. The doors are longer, the boards drop down so nobody has to climb, and the glass is thicker than the standard car's because the point is that the back is quiet.

From outside it announces itself with chrome and does the rest by size. Parked next to a normal GLS it is the same length and a different proposition, and at a hotel entrance that difference is legible from the far end of the forecourt.
