The Maybach GLS 600 starts as the largest SUV Mercedes makes. Maybach then takes the third row out, puts two individual reclining seats in its place with a console between them, adds the vertical-slat chrome grille, polished multi-spoke wheels and running boards that fold out of the sills when a door opens. The 4.0L twin-turbo V8 with EQ Boost makes 550 hp and does it quietly.
This one is satin matte black over a black leather cabin. The matte finish takes the reflections off the body, so the chrome is the only thing that catches the light — round the windows, along the roof rails and across the grille.
It is the car for the evening where the back seat matters more than the driving seat: the airport run, the premiere, the dinner where the arrival is part of it. Take the keys, or book it with a driver.
