Yellow BMW E36 M3 on a jacaranda-lined Los Angeles street

Thirty Years Ago

Yellow BMW M3

A Dakar Yellow E36 M3 from the 1990s — the car everything since has been measured against, and the oldest thing in the fleet by a decade.

It is the only car we let where the point is what has been lost rather than what has been added.

This is not a modern M car wearing retro paint. It is the real thing: a genuine 1990s E36, with a naturally aspirated straight-six, hydraulic steering, no electronic safety net worth the name, and a kerb weight a current M3 is most of half a tonne heavier than. Driving one now is the clearest demonstration available of the trade the last thirty years made.

01On a canyon road in the late afternoon, with the basin behind it. There is nothing between the driver and any of this.

The steering is what people talk about afterwards. It is hydraulic and unfiltered, so the surface of the road arrives through the rim in a way no current car reproduces — you can feel the camber change. The engine revs cleanly to the top rather than shoving from the bottom, which means you use all of it instead of a third of it, at speeds that will not lose you your licence.

And it is small. It fits through gaps and into parking spaces a modern performance car simply does not, and it is narrow enough that a canyon road feels wide. Every one of those things was true of fast cars once and is true of almost none of them now.

Everything since has been
measured against this.

03In profile it is startlingly small next to anything current. The pillars are thin, the glass is enormous, and you can see out of it in every direction.

Queries

How much does it cost to rent a classic BMW M3 in Los Angeles?
The yellow E36 M3 is $299 a day. The day rate is the whole of it on this car — there is no weekly or monthly block, so a longer booking is priced day by day. Delivery to our Beverly Hills partner hotels is complimentary.
Is this an old car or a new one made to look old?
Genuinely old. It is a 1990s E36 M3, the oldest car in the fleet by about a decade, and everything about it is period — including the parts a modern car would do better.
What should I know before booking it?
That it is a car from the 1990s and it is booked by people who want exactly that. The air conditioning is period, the seats are period, there is no screen and no reversing camera. If you are expecting a new car it will disappoint you, and we would rather say so here.
Is it difficult to drive?
It asks more of you than anything else we let, and that is the appeal. Hydraulic steering, a naturally aspirated engine that wants revs, and very little electronic intervention. It is not intimidating — it is just awake, and it expects you to be.
Can I see the dates before I call?
Yes — the diary on this page is the live fleet calendar. If a date is open there, it is open.

The terms, before you commit

Refundable deposit
$750
A hold, not a charge. Back with you 5–7 business days after the car is home.
Damage and liability cover
$100 a day
Mandatory, and priced off the deposit rather than the rate. Your own qualifying full-coverage policy takes this line out of the quote entirely.
Driver, 21–24
$50 a day
Twenty-one is the floor, with a licence held two years. The higher band applies above a $1,500 deposit; this car is below it.
Shortest booking
24 hours
No maximum. Delivery is complimentary at our Robertson Boulevard lot and our four Beverly Hills partner hotels; LAX is $75 to the parking structure or $150 to the terminal, each way.

This one is the same rate at every length — it carries no multi-day block, so three days is three times one day. We would rather say that than imply a discount that is not there.
