The Saloon Everything Is Measured Against

Grey BMW 3 Series

The 3 Series in dark mineral grey — the shade BMW puts on the cars in its own photographs, and the most flattering one on this body.

Every compact saloon for forty years has been described in terms of this one.

The 3 Series is the saloon everything else is measured against, and the current one has not lost the thing that earned it that: it steers. Quick, accurate and calm at once, it makes the canyon road home the best part of the day and then rides the 405 in silence. Four adults sit in it properly, the boot takes their weekend, and it parks on any street in the city.

01Mulholland in the late afternoon: the short boot, the twin finishers, the road this car exists for.

Mineral grey is the shade BMW puts on the cars in its own photographs, and it earns that: dark enough to give the sport bumpers and the deep front intakes some drama, light enough that the crease down the flank still catches the sun. It is the most flattering colour on this body, and with the two-tone wheels this one looks a class above its rate.

This is the 2.0-litre turbo car, rear-wheel drive, quick without being loud. Three 3 Series are in the fleet — grey, black and white — and the dates on each page are the car's own.

Quick, accurate and calm at once.
That is the whole 3 Series.

Queries

How much does it cost to rent a grey BMW 3 Series in Los Angeles?
The grey 3 Series is $102 a day. The day rate is the whole of it on this car — there is no weekly or monthly block, so a longer booking is priced day by day. Delivery to our Beverly Hills partner hotels is complimentary; LAX delivery is charged each way, in two tiers, and the figures are on our delivery page.
3 Series or 4 Series?
Doors. The 3 Series is the four-door saloon with the back seat and the boot; the 430i in the fleet is the two-door coupé and the convertible on the same underpinnings. For four people, this one; for two and a canyon road, the 4.
Is it a good first BMW to rent?
It is the one we suggest. Everything BMW is known for is in it — the steering, the seats, the quiet — in a size that parks on any street in Los Angeles and costs less than most airport-counter rentals.
How do the three 3 Series differ?
Paint. This is the grey car; the other two are on their own pages with their own dates. Pick by colour and by the diary.
Can I see the dates before I call?
Yes — the diary on this page is the live fleet calendar. If a date is open there, it is open.

The terms, before you commit

Refundable deposit
$500
A hold, not a charge. Back with you 5–7 business days after the car is home.
Damage and liability cover
$75 a day
Mandatory, and priced off the deposit rather than the rate. Your own qualifying full-coverage policy takes this line out of the quote entirely.
Driver, 21–24
$50 a day
Twenty-one is the floor, with a licence held two years. The higher band applies above a $1,500 deposit; this car is below it.
Shortest booking
24 hours
No maximum. Delivery is complimentary at our Robertson Boulevard lot and our four Beverly Hills partner hotels; LAX is $75 to the parking structure or $150 to the terminal, each way.

This one is the same rate at every length — it carries no multi-day block, so three days is three times one day. We would rather say that than imply a discount that is not there.
