The CLA is a compact saloon with the roof pulled down and the glass shortened — frameless doors, a tail that falls away, and a cabin that lights itself in sixty-four colours after dark. All of it for a hundred and two dollars a day.

The frameless doors are the tell. Nothing at this price has them, and they are the reason the CLA reads as the expensive small Mercedes rather than the cheap one — the glass drops when you pull the handle and seals against the roof when you shut it.

The cabin does the rest. Twin screens under a single pane, turbine vents, and lighting that runs through the fascia and the doors in whatever colour you set it to.
