The Challenger is the one modern muscle car that never tried to be a sports car. It is long, wide and unapologetically retro — the split grille, the flat flanks, the cabin set far back on a bonnet you could land a helicopter on — and it is the better for knowing what it is. Production ended with the 2023 car, and this is one of them.

01Mulholland at dusk, and the one thing every Challenger shares with the 1970 car: a single band of light across the whole tail.

The practical surprise is the packaging. Every rival coupe treats the rear seats as a shelf; the Challenger has a genuinely usable back row and one of the largest boots of any two-door car sold in America, so four people and their luggage travel in it without negotiation. The ride is soft and long-legged, which makes it a far better freeway car than the shape suggests — an hour of the 405 in this is easy in a way it is not in a Camaro.

This is the 3.6-litre V6, 303 horsepower to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic — not a Hellcat, and we would rather say so here than at the kerb. It sounds right, pulls well from the lights and cruises at a murmur. What you are renting is the shape, the seating position and the presence, at a rate that lets you keep it for the week.

It does not pretend to be a sports car.
That is the whole point of it.

How much does it cost to rent a Dodge Challenger in Los Angeles?
The white Challenger is $149 a day. The day rate is the whole of it on this car — there is no weekly or monthly block, so a longer booking is priced day by day. Is this a Hellcat or an SRT?
No. This is the V6 Challenger — the 3.6-litre, 303 horsepower, rear-wheel drive. It has the shape, the seating position and the sound of the big American coupe without the supercharged V8, and it is priced accordingly. We would rather tell you that now than have you meet the car expecting seven hundred horsepower.
Does the back seat actually work?
Yes, and that is the reason to choose it over a Mustang or a Camaro. Two adults sit in the back without folding themselves, and the boot takes a family's luggage for a weekend. It is the only muscle car we would send four people to LAX in.
Is it easy to drive in Los Angeles?
On the freeway it is one of the easiest cars in the fleet — soft, quiet and unbothered. It is long and wide, so a tight parking structure takes a little care, and the view out of the back is what a 1970 shape gives you. Nothing a mirror check does not settle.
