Can a 17-Year-Old Rent a Car for Prom? A Parent's Answer

No — and the reasons stack in a particular order, which is worth walking through because only one of the three belongs to us. A seventeen-year-old cannot rent the car, cannot be added to it as a driver, and for the first twelve months of a California licence cannot legally drive friends home from prom after eleven at night.

That third one is the interesting one, and no prom-car page in Los Angeles mentions it. The first two are rental policy, and policy could in principle be different somewhere else. The third is the State of California. It applies to your own car in your own driveway, and it does not care whose name is on any agreement.

The three walls, in the order you hit them

Two of those are ours and the last is not, which is the part worth holding on to. Most families arrive at this question expecting to negotiate with a rental company. The negotiation they cannot have is with Sacramento.

What a provisional licence does to prom night

In California a driver licensed before the age of eighteen is a provisional driver for the first twelve months. During that year the DMV's own teen driver roadmap sets two restrictions that read as though they were drafted with a school dance in front of them: no driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., and no carrying passengers under twenty years old unless a licensed driver aged twenty-five or over is in the car.

Now put a prom against that. The dance ends at eleven. The passengers are all seventeen. Both restrictions fall on the same leg of the evening — the drive home — and they fall on it whatever the car is, including the family estate parked outside.

Which reframes the whole question. A parent asking whether the rental company will allow it is asking about the second-hardest constraint. Even in the imaginary version where a seventeen-year-old could sign for an exotic car, the drive everybody actually pictures — four friends, half past eleven, across town — is the part California has already ruled out.

There is an exception written into it, and it is the same exception the sensible version of this evening uses anyway: a licensed driver of twenty-five or over in the car. Which is either a parent, or somebody paid to be there.

So what can a parent actually do?

Two arrangements work. Every prom booking here is one or the other, and the choice between them is the only real decision in this article.

An adult of twenty-one or over is the renter and drives. A parent, an aunt, an older sibling with two years of licence behind them. They sign, their card carries the deposit, they drive, and the students ride. It is the cheaper of the two, and it is what most families choose when dinner is a mile from the house and the venue is a mile after that. The cost is that somebody in the family spends prom night as a driver.

The car arrives with a professional driver. Nobody in the party drives at all. No teenager parks a six-figure car in an unfamiliar structure in formalwear, nobody stands on a kerb at midnight waiting for a valet, and the car comes back to us at the end of the night instead of sitting outside a house until morning. It costs more than keys in hand and it removes every part of the evening a parent actually lies awake about, which is why more prom bookings go this way than the other. There is no third arrangement. The one families ask about most — an eighteen-year-old added as a second driver so they can take a turn — does not exist, because the age floor is twenty-one and the licence history is two years, and eighteen fails both.

The young-driver charge, and why the number changes with the car

If the adult doing the driving is under twenty-five, there is a per-day charge on top of the rate. This is where the honest answer gets specific, because it is not one number.

It is $50/day on most of the fleet, and $175/day on the cars whose security deposit sits at $1,500 or above — the exotic and flagship tier. So the twenty-two-year-old cousin who has been driving since seventeen is a perfectly ordinary renter, but which car they pick moves the charge by $125 every day of the booking.

In practice that draws a line straight through the shortlist. A Corvette sits in the lower band. A Lamborghini Urus, a Mercedes-AMG G 63, a Bentley Bentayga and a Rolls-Royce Cullinan all sit in the higher one. Across a Friday-to-Sunday booking the gap between the two bands is a real number, and it is worth knowing before anyone falls in love with a photograph.

The charge follows the person driving rather than the person paying. A parent of forty-five who signs the agreement and then hands the keys to a twenty-three-year-old has not avoided it — they have failed to declare a driver, which is a worse outcome than paying it.

What sits outside the daily rate

The rate is the rate. Four other things appear on a prom quote, and a parent should see all of them before agreeing to anything.

• A refundable security deposit, held against the renter's own credit card for the length of the rental. It runs from $350 on the smaller cars to $2,000 on the flagships, and the hold is released 5–7 business days after the car comes back in acceptable condition.

The cars that survive a phone camera on a driveway

Once the driving is settled, the choice is photographic rather than mechanical. The first hour of prom happens on a residential street with a dozen phones out and the sun going down behind the houses, and the car has to separate from a hedge and four parked estates while standing perfectly still. Colour does more of that work than horsepower. So does height, because getting out of a low car in a long dress is a real constraint and half of any group ends up photographed beside something tall.

Past five or six people, one large vehicle beats a convoy of small ones every time — everybody arrives together, nobody follows a parent across town at half past six, and there is somewhere to put eight pairs of shoes.
