Who Is Allowed to Drive the Wedding Car? The Four Conditions, and the Easy Route
The groomsman who offers to drive the getaway car is being genuinely kind, and he is also the most expensive sentence at the rehearsal dinner. Anyone who touches the wheel — including the one who only moves it twenty feet — has to be named on the agreement before the day, be twenty-one or over, hold a licence for two years, and be there at handover with it. “He’s insured” is usually not the answer, because a personal policy rarely reaches a car in this band.
A driver under twenty-five carries a charge for every day, in the higher of two tiers on the cars couples actually want. For a day with more than two legs, or a day with drinking in it, a chauffeur is often the cheaper answer as well as the safer one.

Four conditions, and all four have to be true
The rule is short and worth knowing early, and the chauffeur is the easy route around all of it.
A driver of a car in this fleet is someone who satisfies every one of the following, not most of them. Twenty-one is the floor as standard for the renter and for every named driver; a driver of eighteen to twenty is considered case by case, on their own full-coverage insurance and a larger security deposit, approved in writing before the day. A licence held for at least two years, at any age. Named on the agreement before the day, with a physical licence shown at handover and checked against it.
And present at the handover: the practical trap is a couple planning for the bride’s father to drive the getaway car when he is at the venue receiving guests at the moment the car arrives at the hotel. The first three are written into the terms, which is the document that binds rather than a summary of it. The age floor is the same wall a parent hits asking whether a seventeen-year-old can rent a car for prom, where California adds a rule of its own.
Why “he’s insured” is usually not the answer
The sentence that ends this conversation at most weddings is a friend saying he has full coverage. He probably does, and it probably does not reach. Personal auto insurance generally follows the driver into a rental car, but only in the shape it already has: the Insurance Information Institute’s explainer makes the point that the physical-damage limit is written round the car on the policyholder’s own driveway, and a Cullinan is not that car.
Which is why the Protection plan is priced into the quote: per day, set by the car’s deposit tier, so the flagships cost more to cover than the rest of the fleet. A friend’s own policy stands in once it has been read and verified first.
The under-twenty-five case: a driver between twenty-one and twenty-four qualifies, and carries a charge for each day of the rental, in the lower of two tiers on most of the fleet and the higher tier on any car whose security deposit sits at $1,500 or above — which is the exotic and flagship tier, and every car couples actually want for a wedding is in it.
So the twenty-three-year-old brother-in-law who drives the Cullinan for a two-day booking adds two days of the higher tier, and the quote shows that line up front.
The guest who flew in, and the guest who flew further
Weddings import drivers. A brother arriving from another state is straightforward: a valid licence from any US state, two years of history, twenty-one or over, named on the agreement. A guest arriving from another country needs a valid passport alongside their own national licence, and that is the whole list; we do not require an International Driving Permit, which matters more than it sounds, because a permit can only be obtained in the country that issued the licence, before travelling, and the uncle who assumed his licence from home would be enough is the second most common way this conversation goes wrong.
The first is the groomsman. What to send us for each driver: full name as it appears on the licence, date of birth, licence number and issuing state or country, and the year the licence was first issued — the field everybody forgets and the one that decides the two-year condition.
Why the chauffeur line is often the cheaper answer
A second named driver means a second verification at handover, possibly a young-driver charge for each day, and one more person who has never driven the car reversing it out of a hotel structure at eleven at night in a dinner jacket. Against that: a driver arrives with the car, waits through the ceremony without the car becoming a parking problem, repositions it for the exit, and takes it away at the end of the night instead of leaving it outside a house until morning.
Nobody in the wedding party carries a key and nobody is the designated driver. It is quoted against the hours you name rather than by the day, so the comparison is not automatic, but for a day with more than two legs in it, or any day where the people in the car will be drinking, it is the arrangement we would suggest first; the chauffeur page has the shapes it comes in, and where the car waits explains why a driver solves the three-hour gap as well.
What actually happens at handover: the car arrives detailed and staged at the time you named, each named driver shows a physical licence and is checked against the agreement, we walk the car with whoever is receiving it, note anything already on it, and hand over the keys. That is the whole ceremony, a few minutes per driver. If the plan is chauffeured, none of it applies to anybody in the wedding party. The driver is ours, the verification already happened, and the couple’s only job is to get in.
What it costs, and how it reaches you
Every named driver is verified at handover against a physical licence; the young-driver charge is per day and per tier as above; the Protection plan is priced per day off the car’s deposit band and sits in the quote; the deposit is a refundable hold by the car, back 5–7 business days after it returns.
