Who Is Allowed to Drive the Wedding Car
The groomsman who offers to drive the getaway car is being genuinely kind, and he is also the most expensive sentence at the rehearsal dinner. Anyone who touches the wheel has to be named on the agreement before the day, not on it.
Every wedding page in Los Angeles offers a chauffeur as an upsell. Almost none of them explains the rule underneath it — which is a shame, because the rule is short, it is the same at every serious operator in the city, and knowing it early is what stops a plan from collapsing at the kerb on a Saturday afternoon.
If you have not decided between driving yourselves and being driven, the wedding car planning guide is the piece that weighs it as a preference. This one is the eligibility underneath the preference: who is permitted to drive, what each additional driver costs, and why the chauffeur line on a quote is often the cheaper of the two answers rather than the grander one.
Four conditions, and all four have to be true
A driver of a car in this fleet is someone who satisfies every one of the following. Not most of them.
The first three are written down in section one and section five of the terms, which is the document that binds rather than a summary of it. The fourth is the practical trap. A couple will sometimes plan for the bride's brother to drive the exit lap while he is at the ceremony and the car is being delivered to the reception venue three miles away. He cannot be added remotely at seven in the evening because somebody remembered. Add him at the start, or accept that he is a passenger.
Why "he's insured" is usually not the answer
The sentence that ends this conversation at most weddings is a friend saying he has full coverage. He probably does, and it probably does not reach.
Personal auto insurance generally follows the driver into a rental car — but only in the shape it already has. The Insurance Information Institute's explainer on rental car insurance makes the two conditions plain: whatever coverage and deductibles you carry on your own car are what apply to the rental, and if you have dropped collision or comprehensive to save money, you may have nothing at all when a rental is damaged or stolen. Limits are limits. A policy written around a car worth thirty thousand dollars does not quietly grow to cover one worth ten times that because the driver is wearing a morning suit.
Which is why damage-and-liability cover is mandatory here and priced into the quote rather than sold at the kerb as an option to decline. It is per day and it is set by the car's deposit tier, so the flagships cost more to cover than the rest of the fleet — that is arithmetic rather than an upsell. The under-25 case, priced honestly
A driver between twenty-one and twenty-five qualifies, and carries a charge for each day of the rental. There are two bands and the gap between them is the number worth knowing.
It is $50/day on most of the fleet. It is $175/day on any car whose security deposit sits at $1,500 or above, which is the exotic and flagship tier — and every car couples actually want for a wedding is in that tier. The Rolls-Royces, the Bentley, the G 63: all of them sit in the upper band.
So the twenty-three-year-old brother-in-law who drives the Cullinan for a two-day booking adds $350 to the total before anyone has thought about it, on top of being a second named driver. That is not a reason to say no to him. It is a reason to see the number before the day rather than on the invoice.
The guest who flew in, and the guest who flew further
Weddings import drivers. A brother arriving from another state is straightforward: a valid licence from any US state, two years of history, twenty-one or over, named on the agreement.
A guest arriving from another country needs a valid passport and an International Driving Permit alongside their own national licence. The permit is a translation rather than a licence in its own right, it has to be obtained in the country that issued the licence before travelling, and it cannot be arranged in Los Angeles on the Friday. California's rules on what makes a licence valid to drive here sit with the California DMV's driver licence pages; the practical point for a wedding is simply that this one has a lead time measured in weeks.
The uncle who assumed his licence from home would be enough is the second most common way this conversation goes wrong. The first is the groomsman.
Why the chauffeur line is often the cheaper answer
Add it up honestly. A second named driver means a second verification at handover, possibly a young-driver charge for each day, and one more person who has never driven the car reversing it out of a hotel structure at eleven at night in a dinner jacket.
Against that: a driver arrives with the car, waits through the ceremony without the car becoming a parking problem, repositions it for the exit, and takes it away at the end of the night instead of leaving it outside a house until morning. Nobody in the wedding party carries a key. Nobody is the designated driver at their own friend's wedding.
It is quoted against the hours you name rather than by the day, so the comparison is not automatic — but for a day with more than two legs in it, or any day where the people in the car will be drinking, it is the arrangement we would suggest first. What actually happens at handover
The car arrives detailed and staged at the time you named. Each named driver shows a physical licence and is checked against the agreement. We walk the car with whoever is receiving it, note anything already on it, and hand over the keys. That is the whole ceremony, and it takes a few minutes per driver — which is why a wedding morning wants it scheduled at the getting-ready address at nine rather than improvised behind a church at four.
If the plan is chauffeured, none of the above applies to anybody in the wedding party. The driver is ours, the verification already happened, and the couple's only job is to get in.
