Why Is the Lamborghini Urus So Popular, and So Expensive? The Super-SUV, Explained
The short answer

The Urus is popular because it is the one Lamborghini built to be used. It seats five, drives all four wheels, fits a weekend of luggage and starts every morning like an ordinary car, and it still arrives with a V8, a carbon-ceramic brake package and the badge. That is why it became the company’s best seller: in 2023 it was 6,087 of the 10,112 cars Lamborghini delivered, about six in every ten. It is expensive for the reasons any Lamborghini is, and demand has kept it that way. For a few days in Los Angeles, a rental is the most practical way into the badge, with room for four friends and the luggage.

Lamborghini spent decades building mostly two-seaters. The Urus is the one that seats the whole group.

The numbers are Lamborghini’s own. In its January 2024 results release, the company reported 10,112 cars delivered in 2023, its first year above 10,000, and put the “continuing success of the Urus Super SUV” at 6,087 of them. That is just over 60 percent of everything the factory delivered, from a model that first reached the public in late 2017. The same release names the United States as the largest market, at 3,000 cars across the range. The 2024 and 2025 results releases that followed name the Urus SE among the models in the range, but they do not print a split by model again.

Four reasons sit under those numbers, and they are the same four whether you are buying or booking a weekend.

It is a Lamborghini you can use. A Huracán is a two-seat event; the Urus is the one that also does the airport run, the dinner for four and the canyon road on the same day. Nothing about it asks you to rearrange your plans.

It seats five and takes the bags. A weekend for four, with luggage, in a car that reads as a Lamborghini from a block away, is a category of one. Performance at this level usually comes as a two-seater.

It has all-wheel drive and a normal ride height. Canyon roads, wet pavement, a steep hotel driveway and a Sunday drive to Santa Barbara are all in its range, and the V8 is tuned to be heard.

It is the price of entry. New, the Urus SE was priced at $258,000 at its US launch, before destination. The V12 flagship, the Revuelto, starts at just over $600,000, and the V8 hybrid Temerario sits between the two. For a first Lamborghini, the Urus is the one at the bottom of the price list.

Los Angeles adds a fifth. It is a city that lives in its cars, and the Lamborghini that seats a group is the one that turns up outside the restaurant, the studio gate and the hotel, so the model people see most is the model they ask for next. That is visibility rather than a statistic, but it is what you notice in a week here.

Why is the Urus so expensive?

A Lamborghini price is made of four things, and the Urus has all of them.

The engineering. A 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 making 641 horsepower in the original car and 789 in the plug-in hybrid SE, with a 25.9 kWh battery behind it; all-wheel drive; carbon-ceramic brakes; an air-suspension chassis. These are the parts of a performance car in a body that weighs over two tons, and making a heavy car stop and turn like a light one is expensive.

The factory. The Urus is assembled at Lamborghini’s plant in Sant’Agata Bolognese, the same site as the supercars, in far smaller volumes than mainstream luxury SUVs.

The badge. A Lamborghini is priced as one, whatever the body style, and the badge is the reason many buyers come to the Urus in the first place.

The demand. By Lamborghini’s own account in March 2024, orders already covered production of the V8 Urus until the end of its run. A car people wait for does not need a discount, and that is a large part of why the price stays where it is.

The sticker is also only the start of the bill. Insurance, tires, brakes, servicing and the first years of depreciation are what an owner actually pays for, and the break-even between renting, leasing and buying is worked out in days rather than dollars.

Is the Urus reliable?

The fair answer has two halves. Underneath the Italian body the Urus is Volkswagen Group engineering: it shares a platform family with the Audi, Porsche and Bentley SUVs and a V8 from the same corporate family. That parentage is the usual argument for it being the easiest Lamborghini to live with: much of its mechanical and software groundwork is shared with higher-volume cars.

The other half is the public record. The US safety regulator’s recall database shows the Urus with the routine campaigns almost every modern car collects, each limited to particular production runs and put right by a dealer at no charge. Nothing in it marks the Urus out. That is ordinary for a complicated car. It is also why an owner budgets for the dealer, and why a renter does not have to: what a Lamborghini costs to keep running belongs to whoever holds the title.

What a fair verdict looks like

The Urus is a performance car in SUV packaging, not an appliance. It has Group engineering and the brakes, tires and service schedule of a 641-horsepower vehicle. Nothing in the public record singles it out as a problem car.

Is the Urus worth renting instead of buying?

For most people who ask why it is so popular, the useful answer is that the Urus is the Lamborghini that suits a few days as well as it suits a few years. A rental gives you the part that makes it popular, which is the drive, the sound and the arrival, without the part that makes it expensive. The ownership side is covered in the rent, lease or buy break-even.

Nizo rents the Urus and the Urus SE. The Urus is the V8 car in the figures above, 641 horsepower and 3.5 seconds to 60. The Urus SE is the plug-in hybrid: 789 horsepower and 0–60 in 3.4 seconds, with more than 30 miles of electric running for the quiet part of a hotel drive. Both seat five, and each has its own page, calendar and current day rate. If the question is the Urus against its closest rivals, the Urus, Bentayga and G 63 compared sets them side by side.

The short version

The Urus is popular because it is the Lamborghini you can use every day: 6,087 of 10,112 cars delivered in 2023, five seats, all-wheel drive and room for the luggage. It is expensive because it is a Lamborghini, built in small numbers and in demand. Its reliability is that of Volkswagen Group engineering with the usual recall paperwork of a modern performance car.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Urus so popular in Los Angeles?

Nizo Luxury rents the Urus at $999 a day — +1 (424) 303-6496 — and it is the Lamborghini most often asked for here because it does what the others cannot: five seats, all-wheel drive, room for the luggage, and the badge. Lamborghini reported 6,087 Urus deliveries out of 10,112 cars in 2023, about six in ten. In a city built around driving, the Lamborghini that fits the whole group is the one that gets used.

Why is the Urus so expensive?

Because it is built like a Lamborghini and wanted like a family car. The twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 (641 hp in the original, 789 hp in the plug-in SE), all-wheel drive, carbon-ceramic brakes and an air-suspension chassis are performance-car hardware, assembled in Sant’Agata Bolognese in small numbers. Demand is strong as well: Lamborghini said in 2024 that orders already covered the V8 Urus through the end of its run. The Urus SE launched in the US from $258,000 before destination, according to Motor Authority, and options move that.

Is the Urus reliable?

It has Volkswagen Group engineering under the body, which is why it is often described as the easiest Lamborghini to own. It is also a 641-horsepower performance car with recalls on record like most modern cars, listed in the US safety regulator’s database and repaired at a dealer at no charge. A rental puts the ownership side of that question with us, not with you.

Why is the Urus so popular on Reddit and in car forums?

Forum threads are opinion rather than data, and we have not tallied them, so lean on the numbers: 6,087 of 10,112 Lamborghinis delivered in 2023 were Urus. The reasons behind that figure are the ones above: five seats, all-wheel drive, the luggage, and the lowest price of entry in the range.

Is it a good drive, or only a good thing to be seen in?

Both. 3.5 seconds to 60 and a V8 that is tuned to be heard make it quick by any standard, and it is also visible in a way most cars are not. For the drive, pick a canyon road; for the arrival, a hotel entrance. The day decides which half you get more of.

What is the difference between the Urus and the Urus SE?

The Urus is the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 car: 641 horsepower, 3.5 seconds to 60. The Urus SE adds an electric motor and a plug-in battery for 789 horsepower and 3.4 seconds, with more than 30 miles of electric running. Both seat five. Each has its own page and calendar, and the SE’s day rate is $1,199.

Can four friends and their luggage fit?

Yes. It has five seats and takes a weekend of bags for four, which is the main reason it is the Lamborghini people choose for group trips. Tell us the group size and the bags when you book, and we will confirm the fit.
