Protection plans and damage, explained

Whether you are covered and what happens when something goes wrong: what the Protection plan includes, whether your own auto policy or a card benefit reaches an exotic, what a visitor without US insurance does, and damage at return.

The question under every other question is what happens if the car is scratched. The answer has three parts, and the pages that sell the cars only have room for one of them: the Protection plan that goes on the quote, the personal auto policy some renters carry that can stand in for it, and the credit-card benefit that most people assume covers a Lamborghini and almost never does. This hub is the three parts side by side.

Two things to keep in view: the cover sold with a rental here is the Protection plan, and the pages below say what it includes and what stays with you; and the refundable hold is explained alongside it, because a claim touches both. Visitors renting with a licence from abroad have their own page — renting with a foreign licence — and the Amex page says what the card benefit does and does not do.
