Blue Jeep Wrangler on a palm-lined street in Los Angeles

Roof Optional

Blue JeepWrangler

Four-wheel drive, doors that come off, and a roof you can leave at the hotel.

Every other convertible here folds its roof away for you. This one asks you to carry it into the boot yourself, and that is the appeal.

The Wrangler is the only car we rent where the roof comes apart by hand. Lift the panels above the front seats out, stow them behind the back row, and Los Angeles is open over your head — with four-wheel drive underneath for the days the plan involves sand.

01Panels out, and the shape changes entirely — a roll cage, a windscreen you could fold flat, and nothing at all above the front seats.

Jeep has been building the same vehicle since 1941 and has changed almost nothing about the idea. Seven slots in the grille, round headlights, a windscreen bolted on rather than bonded, and body panels that come off with a tool kept in the boot. Nothing else sold today works this way.

What that buys in Los Angeles is a car that suits the whole day — the canyon in the morning, the beach at noon, the valet at eight. It is the only thing in the fleet that is better with sand in it.

Every other roof folds itself away.
This one you carry to the boot.

02Grab handles where other cars put trim, switches you can work in gloves, and a cabin built to be hosed out rather than valeted.

03Fold the back row and the roof panels go in behind it, which is the only luggage arrangement this car really asks you to plan.

Queries

How much does it cost to rent a Jeep Wrangler in Los Angeles?
The blue Wrangler is $129 a day, with multi-day stays discounted. Delivery to our Beverly Hills partner hotels is complimentary.
Do the roof panels really come off?
They do, and they are the reason to book it. The panels above the front seats lift out by hand in a couple of minutes and stow in the boot, so the car is open over your head and still has a roof over the back.
Can I see the dates before I call?
Yes — the diary on this page is the live fleet calendar. If a date is open there, it is open.
