What Is Ground Clearance on a Car? A Los Angeles Driver Guide

Ground clearance is the vertical distance from level ground to the lowest fixed point under a vehicle, measured with nobody in it. It is a single number describing the middle of the car, and almost everything that actually scrapes in Los Angeles happens at the front corner instead.

That gap between the published figure and the thing that touches is the whole subject. Two cars can carry the same clearance and behave completely differently on the same driveway, because clearance says nothing about how far the nose sticks out in front of the wheels. The apron at the bottom of a hillside driveway does not care what is under your gearbox. It cares about the first eighteen inches of bodywork.

So this page defines the term properly, then covers the three angles that decide whether a car makes it up a ramp, and then the specific places in this city where cars get caught — because that list is short, repetitive, and entirely avoidable once you know it.

What the published number measures, and what it does not

The figure a manufacturer prints is the minimum running clearance: the shortest distance between level ground and the lowest rigid point of the underbody, with the vehicle unladen and at its standard ride height. Manufacturers generally exclude parts designed to deform or come off — a plastic air dam, a rubber lip — on the grounds that they are not structure.

Which is exactly why the number misleads. The plastic lip is the part that touches, it is the part that costs money, and it is not in the measurement. On a low car the front splitter can hang an inch or more below the quoted clearance and sit a foot further forward than the front axle.

Two more corrections to the same figure, both of which move it downward on a real day:

  • Unladen means empty. Put five adults and their cases in a car and it settles — often by the better part of an inch on a saloon with conventional springs. The clearance you were quoted was measured without any of them.
  • Ride height can be a setting rather than a fact. Air suspension raises and lowers the whole car; a front-axle lift raises only the nose, by a couple of inches, at low speed, and drops it again automatically above a set speed. A car with either system has several ground clearances and the brochure prints one.

The three angles, which are what actually decide it

Off-road engineering has three numbers for this and every one of them is more useful on a Los Angeles driveway than clearance is.

1Approach angleThe steepest ramp the front of the car can meet without the nose touching. It is set by clearance and front overhang together, so a long-nosed car with generous clearance can still catch where a short-nosed one with less does not. This is the number that decides driveway aprons, and no manufacturer prints it for a saloon.
2Breakover angleThe sharpest crest the car can cross without grounding its belly between the axles. Long wheelbase and low clearance are the bad combination. This is what catches an extended-wheelbase saloon at the top of a steep driveway, where the apron flattens out.
3Departure angleThe same as approach, at the back, and the one people meet while reversing off a ramp they climbed successfully. A rear diffuser is easier to break than a front lip and more expensive to replace.

The practical translation of all three: take the ramp at an angle rather than square on. Approaching a driveway apron diagonally means one wheel climbs at a time and the nose lifts on that corner before the other side arrives. It looks slightly ridiculous and it is the single technique that prevents most of the damage we see.

Notice that four of the six are not roads. They are transitions between two surfaces at different angles, which is what a city built on hillsides produces in enormous numbers, and it is why ground clearance matters more here than the terrain suggests.

The spread across this fleet, high to low

Roughly two to one from the top of the garage to the bottom, which is a bigger gap than most people expect between cars parked twenty feet apart.

Choosing on clearance rather than on badge

If the destination is a house in the hills with a driveway you have not measured, the honest recommendation is the tall car. The Wrangler is $129/day against a $500 deposit and the Range Rover Sport is $286/day against $750, and neither will give you a moment's thought about a ramp. The Corvette is $349/day against $750 and is a wonderful car that you will spend part of the weekend thinking about at every kerb.

That is not a reason to avoid the low ones. It is a reason to know where you are going. Most of our exotic bookings never meet a difficult transition, because the route is a hotel forecourt, a flat lot and a coast road — and a valet at a hotel with a lipped forecourt has done it a thousand times. The bookings that go wrong are the ones where the car goes home with someone to a street in the hills.

Deposits set the mandatory damage-and-liability cover rather than the rate does: $75/day on the Wrangler and $100/day on the Range Rover Sport and the Corvette, with the deposit itself returned 5–7 business days after the car comes back. A scraped splitter is exactly the kind of thing a deposit exists for, which is the other reason this page is worth five minutes.
